Harry said, ‘My father wants to retire when I come home. He has been in practice in our village for almost forty years. My brothers are much older than me – were, for both were in the Reserve and were killed within a few days of each other, right at the beginning of the war. . . . Neither of them went in for medicine – but I have promised, I will take over. I just needed a few year’s grace, I always intended to be an Army doctor, you see.’

‘Tell me about your father, your mother and your home?’ Angel asked. He was standing by the desk, as she wrote her evening reports. They hoped to share a precious hour together while Edith was not about.

‘My father? I take after him, or so they say. He is tall and quiet. His patients love and trust him – rightly so – it will be very hard for me to follow him! He still does his rounds in the gig, with my old spaniel sitting up beside him – not your pretty cocker spaniel sort, more a working dog with a touch of labrador maybe – you’ll love my father, and my dog, Angel! My mother is a little lady, immensely energetic, she’s always busy running this and that, in the village – she thrives on being a grandmother! I know she will thoroughly approve of you! We live in a small village, but my father covers two more – our house is big and shabby – cold as charity in winter, but it’s home, and I love it – you will, too . . . ’
